Beauty Treatments to Relax Your Facial Muscles

Seeing your face change with time can be disconcerting. Aging is a natural and beautiful process— but for many, these changes can feel like they are happening way too soon! Facial wrinkles and fine lines can be difficult to deal with. If you’re looking to prevent those unwanted lines and creases for as long as you can, then the solutions could be simpler than you might imagine.

Botox Injections

Let's talk about Botox treatments. There are plenty of reasons why so many people keep coming back to Botox throughout their lives— they may be looking for preventative treatment against facial aging, a non-surgical brow lift, relief from chronic migraines, or maybe they just want to get rid of the frown lines that are bringing down their confidence.

For many people, plastic surgery is a last resort, and Botox is the perfect alternative! By targeting the underlying muscles of the treatment area, Botox treatments can get rid of those dynamic wrinkles and slow the development of further wrinkles in most patients. Plus, the process is a lot less intimidating than plastic surgery. If you're looking to enjoy the benefits of top-quality Botox in Seattle, look no further!

what is botox?

Botox is a neuromodulator (or neurotoxin). Often just called “toxins,” neuromodulators are some of the most widely used injectable treatments available today. These products are used to address one of the most common causes of wrinkles and fine lines— muscle contractions.

Over the course of a person’s lifetime, they make countless facial expressions when they speak, eat, laugh, smile, or frown. These facial expressions cause muscle contractions, which in turn causes the skin above the muscles to crease. Over time, these movements lead to the formation of permanent wrinkles and fine lines, especially in areas like the brows, forehead, mouth, and eyes.

Botox acts to temporarily paralyze the muscle so it can no longer make the line or wrinkle. Over time the muscle movement comes back– it lasts about 3 months.

How Does Botox Work?

Botox is not a permanent cure for the effects of facial muscle use and the lines and wrinkles that can appear as a result. It can, however, offer you a more youthful appearance without unnecessary surgical procedures. Younger patients and older patients alike can benefit from these injections.
To explain the process simply, a Botox injection will block particular chemical signals from nerves. These are the signals that cause muscles to contract, which leads to those unwanted fine lines and wrinkles. These injections will relax the facial muscles, limiting movement and smoothing out the texture of the skin.

What Can Botox Injections Treat?

There are two main reasons that people receive Botox treatment. The first use for Botox is the most popular and well-known of the neurotoxins. Botox cosmetic treatments are readily available to help slow the aging process, target problem areas on your face, and leave you with the smooth and youthful complexion you’ve been dreaming of. Here are just some of the cosmetic conditions that Botox treats:

  • Frown lines (the 11’s between your brows)
  • Crow’s feet
  • Forehead lines
  • Vertical lip lines
  • Chin dimpling
  • Vertical neck bands
  • Downturned corners of the mouth

What many people don’t know is that Botox injections can be used to treat and ease the symptoms of several other conditions as well. At times, a doctor may recommend receiving Botox treatment to help minimize particular habits or health issues. These can include:

  • Excessive sweating
  • Teeth grinding
  • Migraine headaches

Is Botox Safe?

If you’re considering Botox treatment, it’s natural to worry about the safety of the process. Many people worry about the effects on their facial muscles, worried that an attempt to get rid of frown lines will leave them with permanent side effects or health problems they didn’t want.

At the end of the day, Botox treatment is completely safe, so long as you’re under the care of a licensed, skilled, and experienced provider. Harm and undesirable results are certainly possible, but only when the injections are performed incorrectly. When you work with a team of experts, you don’t need to worry about safety issues.

Who is Botox Suitable For?

As outlined above, there are two main reasons to undergo Botox injections— cosmetic, or to combat certain health issues such as excessive sweating or migraines. If you’re looking to benefit from the anti-aging effects of this treatment or have been recommended by a doctor to consider Botox to mitigate other conditions, then this could be the right process for you.
Botox injections are best suited for people 18 years and over, who are not pregnant or breastfeeding. It is best to be in good physical health, as well. To discuss whether you are a good candidate for Botox injections, reach out to the experts at Glow Medispa today.

Dysport Injections

Dysport injections will take just a couple of days to provide the smooth, natural results you’re hoping for. Very similar to Botox, Dysport can be used to treat all of the same conditions. Dysport tends to set in more quickly than Botox, and lasts longer.

what is dysport?

Dysport® is a neuromodulator very similar to Botox. It works in the same way, temporarily paralyzing certain muscles that make the most prominent facial lines and wrinkles. Dysport, like Botox, is formulated using a substance called botulinum toxin. Once this substance is injected into the muscles during a neuromodulator treatment session, the muscles are temporarily relaxed. This allows the skin above them to smooth and soften. Because the relaxation that botulinum toxin provides for wrinkles is only temporary, patients must undergo repeated injections to maintain their results. Dysport lasts about 4 months.

Not only do the treatments work in a similar way, but the results are also very comparable! Dysport can be used to treat similar areas as Botox, providing the same overall results. Deciding which is better for you is a personal decision that your local beauty expert can advise you on.

What is the Difference Between Botox Injections and Dysport Injections?

protein structure

BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® have the same active part of the toxin. This consists of 2 protein subunits which together have their action in the neuromuscular junction, preventing stimulation of muscle contraction. Botox also has a big protein coat around the active part of the toxin. Dysport has a small protein coat. Both Botox and Dysport come in a sterile vial in the form of a powder. Both need to be reconstituted with saline (salt water) in order to be ready for use. When saline is added to the vial, the protein coat separates, and the active part of the toxin is what matters to have the effect. In this way the toxins are essentially identical.

time to onset of effects

Botox takes about 1-2 weeks for its full effect top set in. Dysport is a little quicker, about 3-5 days.

duration of effects

Botox lasts about 3 months. Dysport lasts about 4 months.

cost

Cost varies depending on what region you are in and where you go. In the past, Botox and Dysport has been either the same cost or Dysport can sometimes be less expensive. In our office, Botox and Dysport cost the same.

side effects

The risks and side effects for Botox and Dysport are the same. There is a small risk of bruising, and a very small risk of a droopy eyebrow or eyelid.

allergies

Allergies to both Botox and Dysport are extremely rare. Because there is slightly more protein in Botox, theoretically there could be a higher risk of allergy; however, this has never been documented.

botox or dysport: which is a better treatment?

Neuromodulator injection for wrinkles is one of the most extensively studied aesthetic procedures available today, having been the subject of hundreds of peer-reviewed articles and journals. Both are safe and effective treatments.

For Botox and Dysport, the treatment experience itself is the same. Each treatment takes about 10 minutes to complete and brings patients wrinkle correction that can last for three to four months. Following this period of time, patients will need to undergo follow-up injections to maintain their results. Dysport has an edge over Botox in that its onset is quicker and it lasts longer in most people. It can also be a little bit less expensive.

Before & After Botox and Dysport

The most common areas to treat are the glabella (11's), forehead, and crow's feet. At Glow Medispa, we are experts in Botox and Dysport in Seattle and Kirkland.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Botox and Dysport made out of?

Both Botox and Dysport are made from the botulinum toxin. They are proteins that are called neuromodulators– with their effect on the nerve ending that cause a muscle to contract.

how much does botox or dysport cost?

Most places charge for Botox and Dysport by the unit, because every person is different and the amount needed varies greatly. Cost per unit of Botox can range from $12 to $22, depending on location. At Glow medispa our price for Botox is $15/U. The cost of Dysport is the same.

how many units will i need?

Every person is different and every area in the body is different. The number of units is directly related to how big and strong the muscles are and how large the area is. Also, each person’s metabolism is different. This is why you can’t really know the answer for any individual without an assessment by an expert. On average, the forehead requires around 10-15U, the 11’s about 16-25U and the crows feet 8-12U for each side.

how long does it take for botox or dysport to work?

On average, Botox takes 1-2 weeks for its full effect and Dysport about 3-5 days.

how long does botox or dysport last?

Botox lasts about 3 months and Dysport about 4 months, on average.

what not to do after botox or dysport?

Don’t massage the area for 24 hours. Take it easy (no exercise) for 24 hours. No face down massage or upside down yoga! We rarely see anyone do anything to mess up their Botox, but best to play it safe!

how long after botox or dysport can you lie down?

There is no hard and fast rule about lying down– being horizontal is not a problem. Just don’t massage the area. Do the results look natural?

At Glow Medispa, we are always striving to deliver natural-looking results. When you work with a skilled and experienced injector, you don’t need to worry about that dreaded ‘fake’ appearance.

Can I get Botox or Dysport while pregnant?

Many pregnant and breastfeeding women have gotten Botox or Dysport and had no complications. However, due to the lack of definitive studies, many experts recommend you wait until after pregnancy to get Botox or Dysport treatments.

What is preventative Botox?

Most often, people get Botox injections once they start to notice wrinkles and fine lines. However, preventative Botox is the idea that receiving injections before the onset of wrinkles will delay their development taking place. With preventative Botox, you could keep your skin smooth as long as possible!

What happens if I stop getting Botox or Dysport?

There are no serious side effects to worry about if you stop getting Botox or Dysport treatments. Your wrinkles and fine lines will return, though likely at a much more gradual pace than they would have if you never had the injections.
