Microdermabrasion Seattle and Kirkland

WHAT IS MICRODERMABRASION?

This exfoliating facial treatment utilizes a Diamond-tipped wand to manually remove the outermost layers of skin, removing dead cells and surface build-up to reveal a fresh layer of smoother, softer skin. As a result of normal “wear and tear” to the skin and exposure to the environment, skin can lose its natural radiance and take on a dull tone. Microdermabrasion can help restore your skin’s natural glow and with each session taking just 40 minutes, these facial treatments are incredibly easy to schedule.

WHAT DOES MICRODERMABRASION DO?

Microdermabrasion is recommended once every 1-3 months for most people wanting to maintain the softness and benefits of the procedure. Over time the natural sloughing of the skin surface cells slows, ending up in a build-up of old dead cells. These cells are dull and more wrinkly over time. Microdermabrasion on a regular basis can prevent this build-up and improve the appearance of the surface of the skin.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF MICRODERMABRASION?

This is a versatile treatment that can address a wide range of visible imperfections, including:

  • Uneven skin texture
  • Acne and Acne-associated pigmentation
  • Clogged pores
  • Blackheads
  • Fine lines
  • A skin surface that is rough, thickened, and/or dry

how often should you get microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is recommended once every 1-3 months for most people wanting to maintain the softness and benefits of the procedure. Microdermabrasion on a regular basis can prevent this build-up and improve the appearance of the surface of the skin.

how long does microdermabrasion last?

After microdermabrasion, the surface cells slowly reaccumulate, eventually forming the thicker layer of dead cells again. In most people this will take 4-6 weeks. This is very much dependent on your skin care regimen at home. If you continue to use high-quality medical grade skincare products, including products that continue every day exfoliation and those that increase the turnover of those cells, the results of microdermabrasion will last much longer. Ask our team about skin care at home. You can read about our skin-typing system and recommendations here.

how much does microdermabrasion cost?

The cost of microdermabrasion has a wide range from around $75 to $200. At Glow Medispa the cost is $110. Our complete price list is here on our web site.

WHAT IS BETTER: A CHEMICAL PEEL OR MICRODERMABRASION?

Both microdermabrasion and chemical peels aim to exfoliate the dead cells at the surface of the skin. They can both be used to maintain the skin, but are not interchangeable. With many chemical peels, a liquid is applied to the skin and it will cause peeling (like a mild sunburn) over a few days' time. With microdermabrasion, those skin surface cells are vacuumed away at the time of treatment, so results are a bit faster with microdermabrasion. On the other hand, chemical peels also contain ingredients that are helpful for treating other conditions (such as acne) and anti-aging ingredients that will help the skin in other ways than just exfoliation. Some people’s skin will tolerate one better than the other. So, the choice of what tool to use is very much based on the individual’s skin. One size does not fit all! This is why it is so important to choose a skincare specialist who knows how to make a medical skin assessment.

WHAT IS BEST FOR ACNE SCARS: MICRODERMABRASION OR MICRONEEDLING?

We get this question a lot! First of all, when we refer to acne scars, we are talking about the dimpling or divot you see in the skin after the acne has resolved. This is true scarring. Hyperpigmentation, or brown spots, at the site of prior acne is a different issue. Hyperpigmentation can often respond to exfoliation treatments like microdermabrasion. But real scarring, where the skin is scarred with focal collagen loss, will only respond to a treatment that goes deep into the dermis to trigger new collagen there. The best treatment is microneedling combined with radiofrequency (RF) using Genius. You can read about that here.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MICRODERMABRASION AND DERMAPLANING?

Another great question! These two services do almost the same thing using different techniques. Microdermabrasion, as discussed above, uses a device with a rough diamond tip and a vacuum to remove the surface cells. Dermaplaning uses a sharp blade to scrape those surface cells off. Both achieve a similar exfoliation, but only dermaplaning will also remove all of the hairs on the skin.

WHAT RESULTS CAN I EXPECT?

After just one microdermabrasion treatment, most patients report a visible difference in the appearance of their skin. Depending on your skin condition and desired outcome, more than one session may be necessary to create the best results. Our medical team will let you know what you can expect during the treatment process and how you can maintain your results.

Although treated areas may have a pinkish glow afterward, patients are typically able to return to normal activities.
