what to expect: LaseMD ultra resurfacing

Preparation:

  • Stop topical Retinols and Retin-A (tretinoin) 7 days prior to treatment.
  • If you have a history of cold sores (herpes simplex) we can provide a prescription to prevent an outbreak. This is started the day before the procedure.
  • If you have a darker skin tone, prone to hyperpigmentation or melasma it will be important for you to be on a lightening serum or cream prior to starting LASEMD. It will be best started 2 weeks prior to treatment. This will limit any skin discoloration due to injury.

The day of the Procedure:

Prior to your first and last treatment we will take pictures.

A very strong topical anesthetic will be applied to the areas being treated for 30 min.

The treatment itself takes about 15-30 minutes depending on the size of the areas being treated and number of passes.

After the procedure, either EltaMD Laser enzyme gel or a biocellulose mask will be applied to calm the skin

Post procedure:

  • Immediately after the procedure the treated areas will be red and mildly swollen.
  • Post procedure the skin may feel warm to hot for several hours.
  • There is often 1-2 days of mild swelling and redness after the procedure. This can be minimized by eating an anti-inflammatory diet. Need help with that? Dr. Otto is a great resource.
  • The skin will develop a sandpaper-like feel over the first 2-3 days. These bumps are tiny bits of skin that are extruded. These will fully resolve over the next 7-14 days.
  • Immediately start to use sunblock (UVA/B, >SPF30) on the treated area.
  • Some people go through a dry flaky phase. The best treatment is a combination of Zerafite and Skinmedica HA5 serum.
  • Acne breakouts occasionally happen after LaseMD. Avoid petroleum products such as aquaphor, neosporin, etc, as they promote these break-outs. Over-the-counter skin care products are often greasy as well, and can contribute. It is always best to use the recommended products post-procedure to avoid this as much as possible. Break-outs can be treated with prescription topical clindamycin if necessary.  If you develop a skin infection an oral prescription may be necessary. Do not hesitate to let us know if this occurs.
  • Avoid swimming, strenuous activity, exercising and sun exposure.
  • Hydrocortisone is discouraged due to side effect of hirsutism and epidermal atrophy.

SKIN CARE POST LaseMD:

  • Jane Iredale makeup may be worn immediately post procedure. Avoid other makeup brands as we have seen acne break-outs.
  • Sunblock should be applied at least 1 hour before going outdoors. Sunblock should be re-applied after going into water and at intervals according to product instructions. We recommend Elta MD Clear SPF 46.
  • Avoid retinoids, glycolic acids, vitamin C products, sunscreens and serums the first night.
  • During the first 3 days: use a gentle cleanser, sunscreens and gentle moisturizers. Please use only recommended products on your skin, as these will help you heal faster.

Results and Expectations

LaseMD causes the surface of the skin to remodel by fractional resurfacing. Tiny bits of the epidermis and a bit of the dermis are extruded by the skin, causing healing and the creation of new skin cells. The result is glowing skin with decreased pigment, smaller pores and smoother surface with fewer tiny lines. LaseMD also stimulates collagen production, helping the skin to keep its thick springy layer. Usually a series of treatments is necessary to achieve the desired results usually 3 treatments 4 weeks apart. LaseMD treatments can also be used to maintain the skin’s collagen, usually one treatment every 3 months.
