Facial wrinkles and fine lines can be difficult to deal with, but BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® can help! These simple, injectable treatments can temporarily soften wrinkles and fine lines near the brows, eyes, mouth, and forehead without the need for extended discomfort or downtime. Both BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport®, the two neuromodulators we offer at Glow Medispa, are formulated using a substance called botulinum toxin. Read on to find out more about Botox and Dysport in Seattle and Kirkland.
Botox is a neuromodulator (or neurotoxin). Often just called “toxins,” neuromodulators are some of the most widely used injectable treatments available today. These products are used to address one of the most common causes of wrinkles and fine lines — muscle contractions. Over the course of a person’s lifetime, they make countless facial expressions when they speak, eat, laugh, smile, or frown. These facial expressions cause muscle contractions, which in turn causes the skin above the muscles to crease. Over time, these movements lead to the formation of permanent wrinkles and fine lines, especially in areas like the brows, forehead, mouth, and eyes.
Botox acts to temporarily paralyze the muscle so it can no longer make the line or wrinkle. Over time the muscle movement comes back– it lasts about 3 months.
Dysport® is a neuromodulator very similar to Botox. It works in the same way, temporarily paralyzing certain muscles that make the most prominent facial lines and wrinkles. Dysport, like Botox, is formulated using a substance called botulinum toxin. Once this substance is injected into the muscles during a neuromodulator treatment session, the muscles are temporarily relaxed. This allows the skin above them to smooth and soften. Because the relaxation that botulinum toxin provides wrinkles is only temporary, patients must undergo repeated injections to maintain their results. Dysport lasts about 4 months.
BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® have the same active part of the toxin. This consists of 2 protein subunits which together have their action in the neuromuscular junction, preventing stimulation of muscle contraction. Botox also has a big protein coat around the active part of the toxin. Dysport has a small protein coat. Both Botox and Dysport come in a sterile vial in the form of a powder. Both need to be reconstituted with saline (salt water) in order to be ready for use. When saline is added to the vial, the protein coat separates, and the active part of the toxin is what matters to have the effect. In this way the toxins are essentially identical.
Botox takes about 1-2 weeks for its full effect top set in. Dysport is a little quicker, about 3-5 days.
Botox lasts about 3 months. Dysport lasts about 4 months.
Cost varies depending on what region you are in and where you go. In the past, Botox and Dysport has been either the same cost or Dysport can sometimes be less expensive. In our office, Botox and Dysport cost the same.
The risks and side effects for Botox and Dysport are the same. There is a small risk of bruising, and a very small risk of a droopy eyebrow or eyelid.
Allergies to both Botox and Dysport are extremely rare. Because there is slightly more protein in Botox, theoretically there could be a higher risk of allergy; however, this has never been documented.
The most common areas to treat are the glabella (11's), forehead, and crow's feet. At Glow Medispa, we are experts in Botox and Dysport in Seattle and Kirkland.
Neuromodulator injection for wrinkles is one of the most extensively studied aesthetic procedures available today, having been the subject of hundreds of peer-reviewed articles and journals. Both are safe and effective treatments.
For Botox and Dysport, the treatment experience itself is the same. Each treatment takes about 10 minutes to complete and brings patients wrinkle correction that can last for three to four months. Following this period of time, patients will need to undergo follow-up injections to maintain their results. Dysport has an edge over Botox in that its onset is quicker and it lasts longer in most people. It can also be a little bit less expensive.
Both Botox and Dysport can soften fine lines and wrinkles, leading to a more youthful appearance.
