Why Collagen-Building Treatments Are Becoming the Foundation of Natural-Looking, Regenerative Aesthetic Care

How treatments that rebuild your own collagen — rather than simply replace lost volume — are reshaping what “good results” actually look like

Three complaints come up more than almost anything else in consultations: laxity along the jawline and neck, crepiness in the skin on the cheeks and under the eyes, and a general sense that skin has lost its bounce, that it doesn’t spring back the way it used to.

Patients describe it differently, “my skin looks tired,” “it’s looser than it used to be,” “it looks crepey no matter what I put on it,” but they’re almost always describing the same underlying change: a loss of the structural proteins that give skin its firmness and resilience.

That change is driven by a decline in collagen and elastin. It’s why the aesthetics field has shifted so much of its attention toward regenerative treatments—those that stimulate the skin to rebuild its own structure, rather than simply adding volume or temporarily smoothing the surface.

This is where the field is heading, and for good reason: it produces results that look like your skin got healthier, not like something was done to it.

What’s Actually Happening Under the Skin

Laxity, crepiness, and loss of elasticity describe related but distinct changes in the skin, and it’s worth separating them because each can inform which treatments will be most effective.

Laxity is a loss of structural support. Collagen forms the scaffolding that helps skin remain firm against gravity. As that scaffolding thins, skin—especially along the jawline, neck, and lower face—begins to sag rather than hold its position.

Crepiness is primarily associated with thinning skin and the breakdown of collagen and elastin. Elastin fibers allow skin to stretch and recoil; as they deteriorate, skin loses that resilience and takes on the thin, finely wrinkled texture of crepe paper. This is especially common in delicate areas such as the under-eyes, neck, and inner upper arms.

Loss of elasticity is a broader term that encompasses both processes: skin no longer snaps back as readily after being pinched or stretched because the collagen scaffolding and elastin network that once managed that tension have diminished.

All three trace back to the same biology. Fibroblasts—the cells in the dermis responsible for producing collagen and elastin—become progressively less active with age. Collagen production slows while existing collagen continues to break down, contributing to an estimated net loss of approximately 1% per year.

By the time patients notice laxity or crepiness in the mirror, these changes have usually been accumulating for years.

Why “Regenerative” Is Replacing “Volume-First”

For a long time, the default answer to sagging or hollowing skin was to add volume back, filler, primarily. Filler still has an important place in aesthetic medicine, and there’s nothing wrong with using it well. But it doesn’t address a significant underlying problem: it replaces what’s missing rather than helping the skin produce more of its own structural protein.

Regenerative treatments work differently by stimulating your body's own natural collagen and elastin. Instead of adding material, they create a controlled stimulus, a micro-injury, a burst of energy, a biologically active substance, that provokes the skin’s own fibroblasts back into active collagen and elastin production.

Done well, the result is skin that’s structurally healthier, not skin that’s been filled or stretched to look that way temporarily. That distinction is a big part of why regenerative treatments tend to age better and look more natural than volume-only approaches: you’re not fighting the way your face moves and ages, you’re supporting the tissue underneath it.

This is also why regenerative treatments are rarely a single session. Fibroblasts respond to stimulation with a burst of activity that fades over months, so meaningful, lasting change comes from a series of treatments, sequenced and spaced appropriately, not a one-time procedure.

Patients coming from a “quick fix” mindset are sometimes surprised by this, but it’s the same logic that applies to any tissue-remodeling process in the body: consistent, appropriately spaced stimulation, not a single intervention, is what drives real change.

The Collagen-Building Toolkit

At Glow Medispa, we work with several different tools for stimulating collagen, each with a different mechanism, depth of effect, and downtime profile. None of them is universally “best,” the right one depends on which concern is most prominent, how much downtime a patient can tolerate, and how their skin has historically responded to treatment.

It also helps to think of these as sitting along a spectrum rather than as interchangeable options. On one end are treatments like PRP and microneedling, which work close to the skin’s own biology with relatively little downtime.

In the middle sit energy-based devices like RF microneedling and laser resurfacing, which go deeper and stimulate more collagen per session, with a proportional increase in recovery time.

At the other end are longer-arc options like Sculptra, which don’t rely on injury at all, but instead work through a slow, sustained biostimulatory signal over months.

EMFACE sits in its own category, a needle-free, no-downtime option that trades speed of results for consistency and ease of repeat treatment.

Where a patient lands on that spectrum usually comes down to how much correction they need, how quickly they want to see it, and how much downtime fits their life.

PRP and Microneedling With Growth Factors

Microneedling creates controlled, superficial micro-channels in the skin, which triggers a wound-healing response and a corresponding burst of new collagen.

Layering in platelet-rich plasma (PRP), drawn from a patient’s own blood and rich in growth factors, or a topical growth factor serum, amplifies that healing signal.

This is generally the gentlest entry point into collagen-building treatments, lower intensity, less downtime, and it’s a good option for patients who want a biologic, close-to-the-body approach or who are just starting to notice early textural changes.

RF Microneedling (Genius RF)

This combines the mechanical micro-injury of microneedling with radiofrequency energy delivered precisely at controlled depths in the dermis.

RF microneedling is many orders of magnitude stronger than regular microneedling, with resultant much more collagen and elastin stimulation than microneedling alone, with commensurately more downtime.

Laser Resurfacing (LaseMD Ultra)

Laser resurfacing uses light energy, rather than needles, to create a controlled zone of injury in the skin, prompting both surface renewal and deeper collagen remodeling.

It’s especially effective for crepiness and textural irregularity, since it addresses both the epidermal thinning and the collagen loss driving that crepe-paper texture.

Intensity is adjustable, which means downtime can range from minimal to more significant depending on how aggressively we’re treating.

Sculptra

Unlike the treatments above, Sculptra isn’t a device, it’s an injectable containing poly-L-lactic acid, a biostimulatory compound that gradually signals fibroblasts to increase collagen production over the following months.

Because the effect builds slowly and diffusely rather than all at once, results look gradual and natural rather than “done.”

Sculptra tends to be a good fit for more widespread laxity and volume loss, particularly in larger areas like the cheeks and temples, and it’s often used as part of a longer-arc plan rather than a standalone fix.

EMFACE

EMFACE is a needle-free option that pairs radiofrequency energy, which heats the skin’s surface to stimulate collagen, with a second technology (HIFES) that simultaneously stimulates the underlying lifting muscles of the face.

The result is a treatment that works on both skin quality and muscle tone at once, collagen building plus a lifting effect through the muscle, with no downtime at all.

It’s a strong option for patients who want consistent, cumulative improvement in laxity and elasticity without needles or recovery time.

Maximizing Results With Powerful Growth Factors (PDGF)

Topical PDGF is one of the newest (and most controversial) additions to the collagen-stimulating armamentarium.

There is a relatively new topical PDGF treatment that is extremely promising for promoting results from any and all of the above treatments that stimulate collagen. The topical that is currently available is a pure recombinant platelet-derived growth factor in a very potent concentration.

It has been quite controversial on social media over the last year because many people are using it for injections. Although the same company produces a similar product that is used in FDA-approved forms, the aesthetics product has not been FDA-approved for injections in humans.

There has been quite a debate about whether this is even legal, and that is beyond the scope of this article. However, it is extremely promising as a topical after any of the above treatments to maximize the results.

Matching the Treatment to the Concern

If face/jawline and neck laxity are the dominant issue, RF microneedling and EMFACE tend to be the most direct tools, since both work specifically on structural support and, in EMFACE’s case, the underlying muscle as well.

If crepiness and surface texture are the bigger complaint, laser resurfacing or PRP/microneedling are usually a better starting point, since they address the epidermal and elastin-related components more directly.

And if the concern is more diffuse, an overall loss of elasticity and firmness across a broader area, Sculptra or a sequenced combination of treatments over time is often the more appropriate approach.

This is, ultimately, the same principle that governs everything else in this practice: a treatment plan should be built around what your skin is actually doing, not around a single trending device.

Most patients get the best results from a physician-guided sequence, sometimes one of these treatments alone, more often a combination spaced appropriately across the year, rather than any single treatment used in isolation.

The Bottom Line

Laxity, crepiness, and loss of elasticity are not separate cosmetic problems requiring separate products. They’re downstream effects of the same biological process, fibroblasts slowing down and collagen breaking down faster than it’s replaced, and the treatments that address that process directly are what’s driving the shift toward regenerative aesthetic care.

The results take longer to show up than a filler appointment does, but they reflect an actual structural change in the skin, which is exactly why they tend to look more natural and hold up better over time.
