Dermaplaning vs Microdermabrasion

Published on: December 27, 2024

These two exfoliation treatments are some of the most popular spa treatments in the cosmetic realm– why choose one over the other? How are they different? Read more to find out which might be right for you.

What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion has been around a very long time. This treatment uses a device with a rough surface to scrub the dead cells from your skin and remove them with vacuum suction. The rough surface of the tip is either made from diamond or crystal, and feels a bit like sandpaper. The microdermabrasion tips have different textures, and usually the treatment starts with a rougher tip and is refined with a smoother tip. The result is a smoother, shinier skin surface. Microdermabrasion also unclogs pores with its vacuum action.

Inside the device is a filter that collects the dead cells from the tubing. The tips are reusable and must be cleaned thoroughly between patients and the filter changed regularly. The device itself and replacement tips are fairly expensive, and it must be maintained properly in order to keep the skin clean and avoid spreading disease and infection.

What is dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning has become more popular in the last 10 years. It is a much simpler treatment that takes more skill and a gentle hand. In this treatment, a surgical blade is used to scrape the surface dead cells from the skin. This must be done very gently to avoid any scratching or piercing of the skin. This not only removes the dead surface cells but also the vellus hair or peach fuzz. The result is very smooth and shiny glowing skin, minus the hair. Dermaplaning does not unclog pores, but often is combined with a light peel for this purpose.

The only equipment needed is a sterile surgical dermaplaning blade. This blade should be thrown away (into medical waste and disposed of properly) after each patient. The investment to offer this treatment is much less, but the training is much more– because these are the same type of blade that can be used in surgery to make incisions– make sure your aesthetician is highly skilled!

How do these two treatments compare?

How are Dermaplaning and microdermabrasion different?

  • Exfoliates the skin
  • The amount of time to perform is about 20-30 minutes, not including skin prep before and after the treatment
  • Cost to the consumer is about the same
  • Both exfoliation services can be performed as a stand-alone procedure or incorporated into a medical facial

How are dermaplaning and microdermabrasion different?

  • Dermaplaning removes all of the hair on the skin whereas Microdermabrasion does not
  • Dermaplaning may occasionally cause break-outs, but this is much less common with microdermabrasion
  • Microdermabrasion requires a costly microdermabrasion machine and regular maintenance
  • Dermaplaning risks include cuts and scratches, which are not risks for microdermabrasion
  • Microdermabrasion unclogs pores but dermaplaning does not

Summary

Dermaplaning and Microdermabrasion are both exfoliation treatments that leave your skin smoother and brighter. Dermaplaning also removes vellus hair. Microdermabrasion also unclogs pores. Both can be part of a medical facial to improve the quality of your skin.
