Where Can You Use Dermal Fillers?

Almost all dermal fillers feature the active ingredient hyaluronic acid. There are several different brands, but our favorites are Restylane and Juvederm. Today, our experts at Glow Medispa in Seattle, WA are answering some frequently asked questions about this treatment, like where it can be used.

Where Can You Use Dermal Fillers?

Hyaluronic Acid fillers can be used to reverse facial signs of aging, including:

  • Perioral lines
  • Nasolabial folds
  • Beneath the eyes
  • Hollow cheeks
  • Thin or asymmetrical lips
  • Marionette lines
  • Sagging jawline
  • Loss of chin definition

How Long Does This Treatment Take?

This treatment can be completed in under an hour.

How Soon Will I See the Results?

The hyaluronic acid gel spheres increase volume in the treatment area immediately because hyaluronic acid attracts and binds to an impressive amount of water molecules. There may be enough volume increase to eliminate fine lines. However, if you have moderate-to-severe volume loss concerns, it can take a few weeks to see the final results of this treatment.

You shouldn't expect to see the final results of your treatment immediately because it doesn't just work by retaining water in the area. It also works by increasing the production of localized collagen. It can take a couple of weeks for your skin to produce extra collagen in response to the treatment and a little while for your skin to smooth out and firm up in response to the extra collagen.

How Long Do the Results of Treatment Last?

Results can last from 6 months to 1-2 years. There are many factors that affect longevity of the treatment. Filler in the lips is the shortest-lived, since there is so much blood flow in this area. Treatment of the cheeks lasts longest because the filler is placed deep next to the bone where there is little blood flow.

Also, there are steps you can take to increase the longevity of your results. You may not need a follow-up treatment for nine months to a year after your initial treatment session. For instance, not smoking will significantly increase the longevity of your results. Smoking, like the consumption of other tobacco products, weakens existing collagen and slows the formation of new collagen. Collagen is an essential protein that keeps your skin wrinkle-free.

What Else Can I Do to Extend the Longevity of My Results?

To help your results last for as long as possible, you need to ensure your existing collagen remains as healthy as possible. You also need to avoid lifestyle choices that will slow the growth of new collagen. Unfortunately, there are many things that damage collagen, including alcohol, dehydration, and sun exposure.

If you want your results to last closer to a year than six months, you need to wear sunscreen diligently. Follow the instructions on the back of the bottle, but it is usually advisable to reapply sunscreen every four hours. For the best results, make sure the sunscreen you choose has a high SPF, protects against UVC rays, and is resistant to water. You should also drink at least half a gallon of hydrating fluids daily and only drink alcohol in moderation if at all.

Should I Take Collagen Supplements?

There is no evidence to suggest that taking collagen supplements will extend the longevity of anti-aging treatments. However, you can modify your diet to facilitate the growth of strong, healthy collagen. Specifically, foods rich in vitamin C and protein are great for the health of your skin. Vitamin C is an essential precursor to collagen growth, and protein contains the amino acids necessary for your skin to build its own collagen.

Am I a Good Candidate for This Treatment?

You may be a good candidate for this treatment if you have signs of aging caused by volume loss. If you are experiencing signs of aging caused by muscle hyperactivity, you will be a better candidate for Dysport or Botox. In some cases, you may be a good candidate for anti-aging treatment with both fillers and an injectable muscle relaxant.
