What is the Best Natural Treatment for Hair Loss? From PRP to Growth Factors to Exosomes

We have been performing non-invasive hair loss treatments with PRP and KeraLase for many years now and have had very good success treating various types of hair loss (alopecia) in both men and women. These treatments offer similar results with about the same investment of time, effort and money. Recently, a new exosome product has some promising early research showing that they may help to boost these results. Read on to find out details and why we have mostly switched from PRP to KeraLase because it is a much easier pain-free procedure with the same outcomes and why we are excited about plated exosomes.

PRP THERAPY FOR HAIR LOSS

One of our most common treatments for hair loss is the use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to repair and regenerate damaged hair follicles and stimulate circulation in the treated areas. PRP contains high levels of platelets, the cellular structures that are responsible for the repairing and restoring damaged tissues, and helps create new blood cells to improve circulation and deliver important nutrients to damaged hair follicles. PRP contains multiple growth factors that can stimulate the hair follicles to make more hair. This autologous treatment uses your own blood to create the PRP that is injected into the areas of hair loss, so there is very little chance of an adverse reaction. You may experience some mild tenderness in the treated area for the first few days following your injection session, but any discomfort can be managed with over the counter pain medication or cold compresses.

With the introduction of KeraLase several years ago, we have been performing few PRP treatments for hair loss. We have found it to match PRP in terms of results with much less pain and soreness, and no need for a blood draw.

KERALASE FOR HAIR LOSS

Our Hair Loss program is one of the most advanced non-surgical programs in the country. We were the first in the Northwest to offer the cutting edge KeraLase treatment for hair loss.

We have been performing PRP treatments since 2015 with great success. PRP requires a blood draw and using the growth factors from your plasma to stimulate hair growth. The only issue with PRP (besides a blood draw and multiple injections) is that your blood contains some factors that actually inhibit hair growth in addition to the ones that stimulate growth. So, depending on the composition of your blood, results can occasionally be lacking.

KeraLase is a combination of Kerafactor Serum combined with Lutronic LaseMD laser system. The Kerafactor Serum is a blend of growth factors that are selectively combined and concentrated into small nano‑Iiposomal carrier particles for easy penetration of the skin. These peptides specifically support increased blood supply and the transition of resting hairs into the actively growing phase of hair growth for optimal results. The inhibitors that are found in PRP have been eliminated from the mix. The most potent peptides are up to a 1000X more concentrated than found in platelets. The result is a much more powerful mix of growth factors that specifically stimulate hair growth that is much more effective than PRP.

With KeraLase, you do not need a blood draw or any painful injections. The LaseMD system allows significantly more permeability of the skin of the scalp for even better absorption of the Kerafactor Serum. Treatments are scheduled every four weeks for a period of three to six months. Studies looking at hair counts, hair density and shaft diameter show a much more dramatic improvement as compared to PRP and the cost per treatment is the same as PRP. KeraLase has been a total game-changer in the world of Hair Loss treatments.

What do plated exosomes add?

bottle of plated brand exosomes

We have been using plated-brand exosomes for about a year now. Exosomes have been studied for decades– they are your body’s cellular vehicles for growth factors. They are tiny membrane-bound particles which contain peptide signals from one cell to another. Each kind of cell in your body sends out signals to other cells– and the exosomes created are not all the same. Some of those signals are positive (growth and healing) and others can be negative (like inflammation). We’ve chosen plated exosomes because these are derived from platelets (the same type of signals found in PRP and Kerafactor) and have been studied extensively at the Mayo Clinic. The plated serums are proven skin enhancers, and studies show that they improve new hair growth, especially when combined with PRP or KeraLase. In fact, the KeraLase treatment can be performed with plated exosomes rather than the Kerafactor serum. It is a promising adjunct to these hair loss treatments.

What to expect after PRP therapy for Hair Loss?

PRP is injected directly into the scalp, causing multiple small scabs. The injections themselves cause some significant discomfort, but thankfully do not take long. A topical anesthetic can be used, or a chiller that provides soothing cold air during the treatment. The scalp will be tender for a few hours, and the scabs will heal on their own without treatment. Do not pick! The hair can be washed the same day or the next morning– shampoo will not diminish the effect of the treatment.

What to expect after KeraLase therapy for Hair Loss?

The treatment itself is a bit tingly but not painful. There is mild redness of the scalp immediately after treatment, which fades over the next few hours. The hair can be washed any time. We recommend Kerafactor shampoo and leave-in topical treatment to enhance results of both KeraLase and PRP.

How long does it take for the soreness to go away after PRP treatment for Hair Loss?

Typically the soreness goes away within a few hours, but occasionally the scalp can take a day or two for the sore parts to fade away. This is avoided with KeraLase Treatment.

What is the best supplement for Hair Loss?

To support maximal hair health and regrowth, we also recommend the Nutrafol nutritional supplement and also topical prescription treatments as well.

WHAT IS NUTRAFOL?

This oral supplement is comprised of nutraceutical ingredients that are designed to work in combination to target various causes of hair loss, including hormones, inflammation, and stress. Stress and inflammation are two factors that are not commonly addressed in hair loss treatments, but they can be the main cause of thinning hair or hair loss. By creating a supplement that targets all of the major causes of hair loss, Nutrafol is able to provide a solution for a wide range of patients and help improve the overall health and quality of the hair. Nutrafol is specifically formulated to treat all these potential causes and strengthen and nourish hair from the inside out. Nutrafol comes in a formula specifically designed for men and a separate formula designed for women, to accommodate the needs of both men and women experiencing hair loss.

KEY INGREDIENTS FOUND IN NUTRAFOL

  • EvNolmax: extracted from palm oil, this form of Vitamin E has been clinically proven to improve hair growth
  • Sensoril Ashwagandha: this supplement has been proven to decrease Cortisol levels, reduce quantities of C-reactive protein (CRP), and improve your resistance to stress, which reduces the risk of hair damage
  • BCM-95 Biocurcumin: extracted from turmeric, this antioxidant helps reduce inflammation that can result in slower hair growth.
  • USPLUS Saw Palmetto: saw palmetto is clinically proven to prevent testosterone from converting into DHT, a hormone that can shrink hair follicles and contribute to hair loss
  • Cynatine HNS: this bioactive form of keratin provides the hair with amino acids like cysteine and proline
  • Hydrolyzed Marine Collagen & Hyaluronic Acid: these ingredients help diffuse nutrients to the hair follicles, improve moisture levels, and help rebuild damaged hair follicles

Other ingredients found in Nutrafol include:

  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin D
  • Keratin
  • Biotin
  • L-Methionine
  • L-Lysine

How long does it take to see results from non-surgical Hair Loss Treatment?

Both PRP and KeraLase are stimulating one's follicles to increase hair growth. This typically takes 3-4 months of consistent treatment before baby hairs are noticeable. Often the person who can detect new hair growth first is the person who cuts your hair. We have many patients who tell us that they were starting to be discouraged when someone randomly commented that their hair looked fuller. It takes time– so you have to be patient!

Hair Loss Treatment Summary

  • LaseMD plus Kerafactor or Plated exosomes every 4 weeks for 4-6 treatments
  • Plated Hair Serum topical treatment
  • Kerafactor Scalp-stimulating shampoo
  • Nutrafol supplements
