Brazilian laser hair removal is when all of the pubic hair is removed with a laser. Brazilian waxing became very popular in the early 2000’s, as more people (both men and women) clamored for the smooth hairless look and feel. Waxing has many disadvantages. It is fairly painful and is very temporary, requiring maintenance indefinitely. Along with issues like ingrown hairs, the biggest complication of repeated waxing is infection. It is not the cleanest area of our bodies! Back then, we saw lots of vaginal abscesses with continued waxing. Laser hair removal is permanent, and when done by a professional, runs very few risks.
What's the difference between bikini and Brazilian when it comes to laser hair removal? A bikini procedure targets the hair around the bikini line, and inner thigh. It removes enough hair so that one could wear a bikini without any hair showing. A Brazilian procedure aims to remove all of the pubic hair.
Brazilian laser hair removal includes all of the pubic hair and the hair along the upper inner thighs of the bikini line. This generally does not include the upper leg or the lower abdomen.
On average, people will need at least six treatments to remove the vast majority of hair in any given area. For the Brazilian area, this tends to be a few more than other areas of the body because this area is affected by hormones and because some portions of the area can be difficult to reach. Most people undergo between 6 and 10 treatments.
Performing laser hair removal in the Brazilian area is a bit complicated and tricky. It is a sensitive area and has a lot of nooks and crannies. It also has to be done carefully and cleanly. It tends to be a somewhat more expensive area to treat than other areas of the body. This can range often from $350 to $650 per session. At Glow Medispa, our price per session is $450, with discounts available through packages. Our full price list can be found here.
It is very important to shave the entire area the night before or morning of the laser treatment. The laser targets the pigment in the hair, traveling down the shaft into the follicle in order to kill the cells making the hair. Any extra hair sticking out of the skin directs laser energy in the wrong direction and only contributes to burning hair smell. It is also important to stop waxing completely if you are going to undergo laser hair removal.
Each session for Brazilian laser hair removal takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Each session should be spaced approximately 4 to 8 weeks apart. Thus, a full series of six treatments can take 6 to 12 months.
Some parts of the Brazilian area can be quite sensitive. The area in front of and above the pubic bone does not have very many nerve endings and treatment in this area is very well tolerated. Treatment lower down in the more sensitive areas can feel quite hot. However, with the right laser, the discomfort can be minimized. Ask for a dual wavelength Alexandrite / ND-Yag laser that is maximized for laser hair removal. These will have the strongest cooling and be the quickest acting, resulting in quick appointments and fewer sessions needed. We have found that with our Clarity II laser, laser hair removal can be done with minimal pain, even in the Brazilian area. We do not generally need to use a topical anesthetic.
Carefully! It is important that the entire area be shaved before treatment. Use a fresh new razor every time. Gently shave the area you would like to be treated. Depending on where you go, the clinician performing the procedure may be able to touch up an area if it is missed. But do your best! Many places do not perform this service.
One major advantage of the Clarity II is that it is safe for nearly every skin type, ranging from light to dark: Clarity II operates using two wavelengths and is one of the few lasers that is considered safe for dark skin, and asian skin as well. Most other laser treatments use only one wavelength, which can affect the skin cells and poses a risk of skin discoloration. Both lasers specifically target the dark pigment in hair follicles, destroying them and preventing future growth. The Alexandrite 755nm wavelength is typically used for lighter skin and the Nd-Yag 1064nm wavelength is used for darker skin types. The hair treated must be in the correct phase of its growth cycle (the anagen phase when it has the most pigment). At any given time, only 15-20 percent of the hair is in this phase, so the treatments are timed with your hair cycle. To eliminate all the dark hair in an area, patients generally need to receive 6-8 treatments. It will not work on blond, white or gray hairs.
